About Fremantle:

Fremantle is recognised as the best preserved 19th Century seaport in the world. Over 150 buildings in the port city are classified by the National Trust, These include: The Round House which was built in 1831 & is the oldest public building in W.A, The Esplanade Hotel which was built in 1890s and the Fremantle Prison which was built by convict labour in the 1850s.

Fremantle was establlished in 1829 as a port for the fledgling Swan River Colony and was the major city in Western Australia for much of its early history. Fremantle became a city in its own right by 1929, and survived the building demolitions of the 1890s and the 1960s. The city emerged in 1987 when it was the host city for the Americas Cup sailing challenge, as a city rich in heritage and character.

Freo as it is also known to the locals, is home to a 500-strong fishing fleet and a vast number of yachts and pleasure craft. Two significant historical replica ships were built here: The HMS Endeavour and the Duyfken which was the first Dutch vessel to chart the Australian coastline in 1666.

1904, is located in the Old Port City of Fremantle, commonly known as The West End and was originally part of a package of land from 66-70 High Street. It was then the site of Stone cottages, which dated back to the areas earliest settlement from 1829. At that time cottages and terraces characterised the West End. High street was named Following English custom, as it was then the main Street of the town. Eastward from William Street the roadway was completed by convict labour.

The buildings from 66-70 High Street, were redeveloped between and during the W.A. Gold Boom of the 1890’s- 1910. Most building development in The West End at this time was associated with the Shipping Industry. Many of the existing warehouses, hotels and commercial buildings date to this period. Also note that the buildings 66-70 high St, were designed by Architect Mr F.W Burnell, and are a representation of the Federation Free Classical Style, complete with ornate columns and faux balconies. He retired to Melbourne with his wife in 1908, hence this building may have been his last work in Fremantle.

Australian Post records show the first Tennant of 68 High Street 1904 to be Armstrong Cycle & Motor Agency. It has been home to many businesses since then, and if the walls could speak, it would tell stories of the constantly changing face of Fremantle. It is currently a café, coincidently popular with many cyclists today.

Many of the Historic buildings in this precinct have been restored by Notre Dame University, and house their Campus. The students and staff have invigorated the heart of the West End.
