About This Attraction

The World War I Memorial on Monument Hill in Fremantle is surrounded by beautiful rose gardens and well maintained lawns. It offers almost 360-degree views of Fremantle, and is an ideal vantage point to look out over Fremantle Harbour and Garden Island. The memorial commemorates the 94 volunteers from North Fremantle who lost their lives in the First World War (1914 to 1918). It is surrounded by an eleven acre reserve and sits amongst by memorials of those who served other wars. Take some time out to relax on the lawns and enjoy the outlook whilst you reflect the true meaning of the memorial and appreciate the meaningful architecture. Designed by architects J.F. Allen and C.H. Nicholas, it is constructed out of Toodyay Stone and was built and unveiled in 1928. A time capsule was placed in the monument on the day of unveiling. Fremantle is a 30 minute drive from the city, with regular train and bus services. Monument Hill is on High Street, a 20 minute walk from the train station, or you can take one of the many buses servicing this route.
